About this product
Polyester satin, and we would rather say so.
100 per cent polyester woven in a satin weave, 51 cm by 76 cm with an envelope closure, in black and eight other colours. It glides like silk, it washes like polyester, and it is priced like polyester.
This is a satin pillowcase, not a silk one. It is 100 per cent polyester woven in a satin weave, which is where the glide and the sheen come from.
That distinction is the whole point of this page. Satin describes a weave and silk describes a fibre, so a satin can be either. Ours is polyester, it says so here, and it is priced accordingly.
What you get for the lower price is a case that goes in the machine, comes out wrinkle resistant and takes marks less readily than silk does. What you give up is breathability.
It closes with an envelope end rather than a zip, so there is nothing beside your face that can catch hair.
51 cm by 76 cm, which fits a standard Australian pillow. Black is one of nine colours at one price, sold singly, as a 2 Pack of the same colour for $59, or a 4 Pack for $109.
A satin weave puts long floats of thread on the surface. That is what gives the fabric its glide and its sheen, and it is the same whether the thread is silk or polyester. The difference between the two is cost, breathability and how the fabric ages.
Polyester wins on care. It machine washes cold, comes out close to wrinkle free, holds its colour through years of washing and takes marks less readily than silk. It loses on breathability: it holds more warmth over a full night than silk or cotton.
The envelope closure is a small thing that matters at two in the morning. The back flap tucks over the pillow, so there is no zip and no metal anywhere near your face or hair.
Sold singly rather than in pairs, so you can buy two of one colour, mix two, or match a sheet set. Black, white, gold, blue and red are shared with our satin sheet sets.
Wash it on its own the first time. Strong dyes in a satin weave can transfer once, and only once.
Still deciding?
Not sure yet? That is fine.
You cannot always judge a product from a photograph. If it is not right for you, send it back within 14 days of delivery in resaleable condition and we refund the price you paid, including standard delivery. That is on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights if anything arrives faulty.
If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Australian Consumer Law and the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 covers you, and we pay the return postage. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.
Satin. It is 100 per cent polyester woven in a satin weave. Satin describes the weave and silk describes a fibre, so a satin pillowcase can be either; ours is polyester, the page says so, and it is priced accordingly.
What size is it?
51 cm by 76 cm, which fits a standard Australian pillow. It is not a European or king pillow size.
How does it close?
With an envelope end: the back flap tucks over the pillow. There is no zip, so there is nothing beside your face that can catch hair.
Is it sold singly or in pairs?
Both. The price shown is for one pillowcase. The Offer dropdown on this page sells two of this colour as a 2 Pack for $59, which saves $7 on two singles, or four as a 4 Pack for $109. For mixed colours, add one of each to the cart.
Which colours do you sell?
Nine: black, white, silver, gold, blue, light blue, lavender, pink and red. The dropdown on this page switches between them. Every colour is the same fabric at the same price.
How does satin feel compared with cotton?
Smoother and cooler to the touch, with a sheen. It has less surface friction than cotton, so hair and skin slide over it rather than catching on it.
Does a satin pillowcase help with hair?
What we can say is a material fact: satin has less surface friction than cotton, so hair moves over it rather than rubbing against it through the night. Many people choose satin for that reason. We do not make claims about hair health or appearance.
Is it good for sensitive skin?
The surface is smooth and non-abrasive, and polyester does not shed lint the way cotton does. If you have a specific skin condition, ask your doctor; we do not make medical claims for bedding.
Does it feel cool at night?
It feels cool when you first lie on it, which is the satin surface. Polyester holds warmth more than cotton or silk over a full night, so it is cool to the touch rather than cooling.
Does it breathe?
Less than cotton or silk. That is the trade for a pillowcase that machine washes, holds its colour and costs a fraction of a silk pillowcase.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, on its own the first time, with no bleach. Line dry or tumble on the lowest heat. It comes out close to wrinkle free, so it rarely needs ironing.
Can I tumble dry it?
Yes, on the lowest heat. High heat can mark a satin surface, so keep the dryer cool or line dry.
Will the colour fade?
Polyester holds dye well, so the colour survives repeated washing. Direct sun fades any bedding, so dry it in the shade when you can.
Will it shrink?
No. Polyester is shrink resistant. Wash cold and dry on low heat and it keeps its size.
Does it crease?
Much less than cotton. It comes out of the wash close to wrinkle free and the few creases drop out on the pillow.
Does satin snag?
A satin weave has long floats on the surface, so a rough fingernail, a ring or a pet claw can pull a thread. Treat it like any fine fabric.
Does the pillow slide around in it?
No more than in a cotton case. The envelope flap holds the pillow in. The pillowcase itself can slide on a satin sheet, which is why we suggest a cotton bottom sheet if you find it moves.
Is it slippery?
The surface is smooth, which is the point. On a cotton sheet it stays where you put it.
Does it match the satin sheet sets?
Yes in sheen and colour family. The sheet sets are microfibre satin and the pillowcase is polyester satin; side by side they look the same. Black, white, gold, blue and red are shared colours.
Is this black pillowcase the same fabric as the other colours?
Yes. Every colour is the same 100 per cent polyester satin. Only the dye differs.
Does it come in a gift box?
No. It comes folded in a plain bag. Tell us at checkout if it is a gift going straight to the recipient and we will leave the invoice out of the parcel.
Does it pill?
Polyester satin resists pilling well. Washing it with rough fabrics, towels or zips can roughen the surface over time, so wash it with other smooth items.
Can I iron it?
Rarely needed. If you do, use the lowest setting and iron on the reverse side. Steam is the safer way to drop a crease.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. It is a standard pillowcase in a smooth fabric. Standard safe sleep guidance for babies applies: cots take a fitted sheet only, no pillows.
Where is it shipped from?
From our own warehouse stock. Our team picks and packs each order and sends it by tracked courier anywhere in Australia.
How much is delivery?
We dispatch within 2 working days. Delivery then takes up to 7 working days by tracked courier. Delivery is free across Australia on orders of $99 or more, and $27.50 including GST below that. Remote and regional addresses may take longer.
Can I return it if I change my mind?
Yes. Return it unused, in its original packaging, within 14 days of delivery and we refund the price you paid. You pay the return postage. This is on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
What if it arrives damaged or not as described?
Keep the packaging and email us your order number with photos. Under the Australian Consumer Law we repair, replace or refund it, and we pay the return postage.
Why is it cheaper than a silk pillowcase?
Because it is polyester. Silk is a natural fibre that costs far more to produce. Polyester satin gives a similar glide and sheen at a fraction of the price, and it washes more easily.
How do I ask a question before ordering?
Email theteam@satinsheets.au and a person on our team will answer, usually within one working day.
The complete guide
Satin, silk and polyester: what this pillowcase is and is not
3 min readSatin Sheets Company
Satin is the weave, polyester is the fibre
A satin weave puts long floats of thread on the surface, which is where the glide and the sheen come from. Any fibre can be woven that way. This pillowcase is 100 per cent polyester satin, and the page says so because the difference between a polyester satin and a silk satin is the whole difference in price.
What you get for the price
A pillowcase that goes in the washing machine, comes out close to wrinkle free, holds its colour and takes marks less readily than silk. The surface has less friction than cotton, so hair and skin slide over it rather than catching.
What you give up
Breathability. Polyester holds more warmth than cotton or silk over a full night. It feels cool when you first lie on it and warmer by morning. If you run hot, pair it with a cotton bottom sheet.
One size, nine colours
51 cm by 76 cm, the standard Australian pillow size, with an envelope closure and no zip. Sold singly, so you can buy a pair in one colour or mix two. The five sheet set colours (black, white, gold, blue and red) match our satin sheet sets.
Washing it
Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, on its own the first time, with no bleach and no fabric softener. Line dry or tumble on the lowest heat. Wash it with other smooth items, not towels or zips, so the surface stays smooth.
About black
Black shows the sheen most and shows lint most. Keep a lint roller handy.
